In Episode 12 of the Quest for Perfection on the 1997 BMW E36 M3 sedan, we start addressing the paint on the driver’s side of the car. After a thorough clay bar application to remove dirt, grime, and contaminant still left behind after washing the car, we then attack the actual imperfections in the paint with a two-stage polishing approach using Sonax Cut Max and Sonax E04-06 finer polishing compounds to remove scratches, swirls, and blemishes.

In the middle of the process, the Griot’s Mini Me 3-inch orbital stopped working and progress had to be made with the 6-inch Rupes orbital or by polishing sections by hand.  Once we receive a repair or replacement orbital from Griot’s Garage, we’ll return to the driver’s side body panels to finish the second Sonax polishing stage and call this step entirely complete.
