In Episode 07 of the Quest for Perfection on the 1997 BMW E36 M3 sedan,we replace the headlight instrument cluster bulb that illuminates the interior dash comprising the headlight knob and fog light button. We remove the entire headlight instrument/HVAC cluster to remove the old bulb, insert the new bulb, and put the cluster back in the dashboard. Sounds simple, but there are several potential hangups spots along the way!
The headlight instrument cluster bulb is an “always on” bulb because it controls the headlight and fog light switches. If it’s dark out and you need to use these knobs and switches, they need to be illuminated before you actually turn them on. After years of constantly being illuminated, the bulbs eventually burn out and oftentimes never get replaced. Some owners are even unaware that these instruments illuminate at all.
