In Episode 04 of the Quest for Perfection on the 1997 BMW E36 M3 sedan, I remove the broken, dry-rotted, and failing front windshield cowl and replace it with a brand new cowl replacement kit from ECS Tuning. The kit for the sedan comes with two cowl pieces, compared to one single cowl piece for both coupe and convertible. All kits includes grommets and fasteners to complete the job.
I remove the windshield wiper arms, airbox grill, old cowl, clean underneath where tow decades of dirt and grime have found a home, then install the new cowl. But all does not go according to plan and I run into trouble about 90% of the way to completion. If you listen to my advice, follow my steps, and pay attention to the mistakes I made, chances are you’re removal and replacement experience will go smoother.
